Optical Metrology
Optical metrology encompasses the science and technology of measurements related to light. This broad and complex field bridges fundamental physics and applied engineering, providing the theoretical framework and practical techniques necessary to quantify electromagnetic radiation within and adjacent to the visible spectrum.
The discipline is broadly divided into two major branches: radiometry and photometry. Radiometry concerns the absolute measurement of optical radiation in terms of purely physical power (watts) across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Photometry, by contrast, focuses strictly on the measurement of visible light as perceived by the human visual system, inherently weighting physical power by the standardized spectral responsivity of the human eye.
